PTE - Pearson Test of English

The Pearson Test of English is the first fully computer-based English language proficiency exam for immigration and study abroad. Four skills will be evaluated in the test: speaking, writing, listening, and reading. The exam lasts three hours, and the Global Scale of English (GSE) is used to calculate scores. Which PTE Type Should You Select, and How Many Types Are There?

There are two types of PTE available to test takers: PTE Academic and PTE Home.

What Qualifications Are Needed for Taking The PTE?

No specific criteria have been outlined by the test conducting authority for individuals wishing to take the test. However, students have to be 16 years old to take the test. A parental consent document must be obtained for students who are less than 18 years old.

What Is the Structure of The Pte Exam?

The PTE consists of three primary sections: Speaking, Writing, Listening, and Reading. Between the reading and listening portions, there is an optional 10-minute break throughout the three-hour session.

With a variety of questions, the academic test will assess your language proficiency in a real-world context. The test consists of 20 different kinds of questions, from multiple-choice questions to essay writing.

PTE Exam Format

Speaking and Writing (77 - 93 minutes)

Part 1 will concentrate on your writing and speaking abilities.

  • Speaking and writing in a learning environment will be examined to evaluate both skills.
  • Types of questions asked – Personal information, Repeat sentence, Read aloud, Describe image, Answer short questions, Re-tell lecture, Summarize written text, and Essay.
  • The duration of each question type will range from 10 to 40 seconds. Ten minutes will be allotted for summarizing written text, and twenty minutes for answering essay questions.

Reading (32 - 40 minutes)

Part 2 will concentrate on your reading abilities.

  • There will be 15–20 independent and integrated tests of skills in this segment.
  • Types of questions asked – Multiple choice – Multiple Answers, Reorder paragraphs, Reading and Writing Fill in the blanks, Fill in the blanks, and Multiple choice – Single answer.

Listening (45 - 57 minutes)

Your listening abilities will be the main emphasis of Part 3.

  • The questions include audio or video clips that play automatically.
  • These clips are not replayed; they are only played once. As the video plays, you are free to take notes. With every question, you get the chance to change the clip’s volume.
  • Types of questions asked – Multiple choice – Multiple Answers, Summarize spoken text, Fill in the blanks, Multiple choice – single answer, Highlight correct summary, Select missing word, Highlight incorrect words, and Write from dictation.

The PTE Academic exam is a combined skill assessment. Multiple skills will be assessed simultaneously in every part of the test.

In What Way Will You Be Scored?

The exam is scored on a global English scale. Any other English language assessment, including the TOEFL and IELTS, can be used to compare the results. For a summary of the scoring system, see the table below.

Your total score as well as the scores for your enabling and communicating skills will be included in the score report. Each skill has a score range of 10 to 90 points.

  • Your total score represents your overall proficiency in the English language and is determined by adding together all of the test’s parts.

  • Your communicative abilities are based on skill categories such as reading, writing, listening, and speaking, either separately or in combination with other skills.

  • Based on the quality, formal elements, and accuracy of the answer, points are given. You will receive one point for each right response. If the answer is just half accurate, you can still get some credit.

After the exam, your results will be available in five days. You can only view your scores online using your PTE account. An email informing you of the same will be sent to you. In addition, you are free to forward your results to as many universities as you desire as well as the immigration offices in the UK, Australia, or New Zealand for those purposes.

Guidelines for Exam Day at the Testing Center

  • The exam is administered in a testing center. Make sure you have your passport or ID with you before you leave your house so you can be identified. The name you provided on your test registration form should match with the one on your ID.
  • Arrive at least half an hour ahead of time to finish the identification procedures. The email you get upon confirmation will provide the precise address of the test center.
  • You must complete the security and identification verification forms at the center. You will also be required to read the agreement and guidelines for test takers.
  • You can take the exam after completing the required paperwork, which includes presenting your ID, signing, and having your picture taken. You’ll be given a small to store your possessions. During the exam, you will not be permitted to bring any personal items with you, like watches, jewelry, clothing, etc.
  • Once the equipment has been inspected, the exam may be started by following the on-screen instructions.
  • The reading and listening sections will be separated by an optional 10-minute break. Raise your hand to indicate that you want to take a break, and the test administrator will assist you.
  • You will receive a Confirmation of Attendance message after the test. Once that’s done, you can gather your stuff.
  • The result will be available in five business days.

How Do You Postpone or Cancel the Exam?

With your PTE account, you have the ability to postpone or cancel your exam at any time. To save money on cancellation fees, it is advisable to reschedule or cancel the exam as soon as possible.

If you have at least 14 days left before your test, you can postpone or cancel it for free. If you need to reschedule or cancel with 13–8 days left before the exam, you will be charged 50% of the registration price.

If you decide to postpone or cancel the exam within seven days of the scheduled date, you will be responsible for paying the full registration price.
